OOTD-Olive

This past week has been “Green Ribbon Week” (promoting health and safety) at my boys’ school.  One of my good friends and I were in charge of it and let me tell you…it has been EXHAUSTING!  We planned fun activities for the students to get them trying to do more in the way of exercise and general safety (especially when on the way to school).

I have been home only a few hours each day and I am seriously excited for the weekend!  I even told Josh that it is time for a date night, in which he told me that NY counted as going on dates and he was set for about 20 weeks…but in the end he agreed that we needed a date :)

I wore this outfit as I ran around today and it ended up being just perfect as the weather was cool in the morning and hot in the afternoon.  It worked both ways.  Don’t ya love that?

Tomorrow is the end of Green Ribbon week and it has been so fun.  I was proud of my kids insisting on riding their bikes or walking each day, even when one of the days it was raining.  Tomorrow the kids are all supposed to wear green…I was a bit premature with this outfit, hopefully I can find another green look in the ole closet…

In Which a Utah Girl Falls in Love With the Big Apple

We came home from New York to an extremely harsh reality.  This week has been one of the busiest of my entire life as a mother.  I wake up early, go all day stopping home only to drop off or pick something (or someone) up and then go on my way again.  I haven’t had much time to spend on my appearance so I figured we’d skip any sort of outfit posts as you may never some back again :)  I decided that it would be a good time for a seriously obnoxious load of pictures few pictures from our recent trip. They are a mix of my camera and the pictures I posted on Instagram

Let me start of telling you that I had been to New York once before.  I was 19 and afraid of EVERYTHING.  I was sure that I was going to end up dead in a dumpster somewhere.  I had only been out of the state with my family previous to my trip as a 19 year old and the NY trip I went with one of my roommates.  I was a bit of a mess…although I really liked it, but a mess just the same.

Josh and I have traveled quite a bit and so I now consider myself a fairly traveled gal and I was excited to go back to New York and actually enjoy myself.  Josh is the perfect traveling partner because he is fairly fearless and can find his way around any city (I am directionally challenged).

Our hotel was right off Time Square with was perfect because pretty much anywhere we’d heard of to eat was fairly close to the hotel and we got to pass through it dozens of times on our way to and from different adventures.  We spent our first morning enjoying and biking around Central Park.

The main thing Josh had put on his list of things to do was to go to The 9-11 Memorial, so we made that our first stop.  It was so surreal to be there.  The picture above is the new building that is going up.

The memorial is a huge fountain with the names of all of the victims around it.  As we walked around we both relived that day and the following days all those years ago.  Josh and I had been dating a few months and we both could remember so many details of that one horrible day.  It was interesting that most people there were whispering or talking really quietly.  It was definitely an experience I will always remember.

As we walked around we happened upon Bryant Park.  We’d missed NY Fashion Week by a few days, but there were still a whole bunch of remnants of the week around.  That night they were getting ready for a hoe down.  We should have stayed…but we didn’t.

One of my favorite buildings was the NY Public Library.  It was so gorgeous.  It kept reminding me of Breakfast at Tiffany’s (LOVE that movie).

We spent most of this day shopping in SOHO.  It was POURING rain, so we didn’t get many pictures, but if we had taken any it would have been with me blissfully gathering armloads of clothes for the dressing rooms and Josh sitting with the other husbands/boyfriends on a bench playing on his phone.  He earned MAJOR brownie points this day…

We ate some INCREDIBLE food on our trip.  We had The Shake Shack TWICE and a little pizza place my friend suggested twice as well (had to get our fill).  We even just walked into a little Italian cafe and found some of the best Italian I have ever eaten.  We also visited Crumbs twice…

Josh had to be in conferences for part of our trip so my parents flew in to hang out with me during the day and we met up with Josh after the conferences for fun things each night.  As we are all Yankees fans, we thought it might be apropos to go to a game.  We were so glad we did as it was a GOOD GAME.

The next day we did the double decker bus thing while Josh was at his conference.  I had wondered where this globe had gone that had been in front of the World Trade Center.  I have a picture of it from my first trip.  We stumbled on it by chance in Battery Park.

That night we headed to Broadway.  Josh and I saw Wicked in London, but my parent had never seen it.  We decided that needed to be remedied and took them.  They loved it and we loved it just as much the second time as we did the first!

The next day was spent on a tour of NY from the water and then going to the Statue of Liberty.

It’s funny that the Statue of Liberty is SO commercialized that I couldn’t have predicted the awe and amazement I felt being so close to it.  I kept thinking of what it was like for my ancestors to get their first glimpse of her after a long and miserable boat ride.  To know they had finally reached their destination and were going to start a new life.  I think I would have been so scared, but I am glad they made the decision they did.

I was so picture happy on this trip (okay I am usually picture happy), but I just wanted to remember every detail!

Our last night we ate dinner at The Rockefeller Center.

It was the perfect place to end our wonderful trip.  I have to be honest, I went home exhausted.  We ran from one thing to another from sun up to sun down, but it was the good kind of exhausted.  I LOVE New York and totally want to bring my boys back to show them this amazing city.

Our flight was SO EARLY the next morning, but when I looked out my window, but is what I saw.  The sunrise above the clouds was so gorgeous!

Matchity Match

Hello lovlies!  I am home from New York.  We had an AMAZING time and seriously loved every second of it.  We ate amazing food, shopped like crazy (oh I have a wonderful husband for putting up with an entire day of shopping in SOHO), saw the sights and came home happy campers!  Thank you to all of you for your suggestions because the trip was so much better because we knew of so many awesome things to do!

So ya know how there aren’t many rules left in the fashion world any more?  Ya, clashing is okay, white is totally cool after Labor day and mixing stripes and polka dots is all the rage.  Well, I am still an old fashioned kind of girl and although I love to break all of those crazy rules (I am SUCH a rebel), I still am a big fan of a big ole match fest.  You know, the head to toe kind of match.  I sort of swoon at old movies when they have perfectly matched shoes and handbags…love it!

You know sometimes when you see something and think you are going to definitely love it and then you see something and think maybe you’ll like it…well those feelings can pretty much sum up this post.

When I saw this jacket online a little over a month ago, I had a crush on it instantly. Luckily, I had to go exchange some items. When I got there & discovered that they were having 30% off, it was a no-brainer…I had to try the jacket on. (Note to self & other shoppers: If you are on a shopping freeze, do not try something on that you think you may like.) I put it on & I knew that I could not leave the store without it!!! It needed a nice warm place to call home & that place was going to be my closet! Plus, it was the last one in my size. I had no choice, really. This jacket was definitely a yes!!

On the other hand, I’ve been seeing all of these other fashionistas donning their adorable floral pants, I just didn’t think they would suit me. It was a really big maybe on whether or not I wanted to indulge in this trend. While shopping online for Star Wars gifts, I spotted these floral pants and thought they were pretty cute. The price was just right(only $22.99). I usually don’t spend a lot of money on pieces that I think are quite trendy & may only exist in my closet for a short period of time. So, my maybe turned into I’ll give them a try. Well, I tried them on & much to my surprise I really liked them! What do you all think of floral pants? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Don’t forget to visit me at {Dreaming In Cashmere}. Hope everyone has a fantastic day!!!

Guest Post-Because Shanna Said So

Today I have Shanna from Because Shanna Said So guest posting for me.  This girl is ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE.  She is one of those people that I feel like I know, although we’ve never met.

Hi, I am Shanna from Because Shanna Said So. Here is the 411 in case you have NO IDEA who I am. I blog about fashion (a.k.a. my personal outfits), beauty obsessions and random life happenings. I try not to take myself too seriously and from time to time, have no problem making fun of myself.

I am super excited to be taking over Emily’s blog today while she is off on a New York adventure with her hubs. Hope you are having fun, Emily. Looking forward to my Empire State Building souvenir statue!

Today I wanted to share with you five of my favorite trends for the fall season. These are in no particular order and I love them all equally. I wish I could post the other five that I am lusting over, but maybe we can save that for another day and time.
Okay, so here we go.

The Shift Dress

First up is the shift dress.
This is one style that we can all wear and it can be easily remixed as a tunic when belted.
Throw on some skinny jeans or a pair of leggings and you have a completely different look.
Leopard Print

In my humble opinion, leopard is a print that is timeless. Whether you like it or not, it is popping up everywhere, dresses, shoes, scarves, clutches, belts, denim…you name it. Make sure to have at least one piece of this print in your closet.
The Vest

This vest is probably the most versatile piece you could own this season. It is sold out online at Old Navy, but I have still seen it in local stores. I am also sneaking in a 6th trend that I am adoring, short boots. They look great with skirts, dresses and skinny denim.

Printed Denim
Here is a trend that I was weary of at first, printed denim…especially floral printed denim. But, now I am in LOVE. Again, this is a trend that you will continue to see in all of the stores. There are a variety of designs and prints popping up all over the place. Make them your statement piece.
Polka Dots

And last but not least, polka dots. This is one print that I can’t get enough of. I have more dots hanging in my closet than I do solids. It’s getting a bit out of control. Polka dots are fun to mix with other patterns like stripes, floral or even other polka dotted fabrics.

What fall trends are on your top list?

Thanks again, Emily, for inviting me over today! I hope each of you stop by and see me sometime!
I love making new friends and discovering new blogs!
